  18.         characters.  Well, it wasn't too difficult and I was changing
  19.         the file format anyway :-)

  21. DOCUMENT ACCESS COUNTER

  23.         Just a bit of fancy nonsense to mimick what is often seen on WWW
  24.         pages-- an access counter.  It is displayed on the local screen
  25.         when entering document details and it can be displayed within a
  26.         document, header or footer using macros.

  28. MACROS FOR USE IN HEADERS, FOOTERS AND DOCUMENTS

  30.         Ah, these macros I was talking about.  There are now a few
  31.         expandable macro sequences such as {N} for user name and {U} for
  32.         user address.  These can be placed in document text files, and
  33.         they will be expanded when the document or header or footer is
  34.         sent.

  36. SECRET (UNLISTED) DOCUMENTS

  38.         Rather than include a password for reading, I decided to allow
  39.         document names to be kept off the document list.  If you don't
  40.         want unauthorised people to get this document, don't tell them
  41.         about it :-)

  43. EXPANDED SUBJECT LINE FOR OUTGOING MESSAGES

  45.         If you think your document name is too terse as a subject
  46.         header, you can specify a more descriptive comment for the
  47.         subject header of outgoing document messages.  This feature can
  48.         also help with other message flags, see below.

  50. OPTIONAL KILL AND OTHER MESSAGE FLAGS FOR EACH DOCUMENT

  52.         The global kill flag of InfoMail 1.00 has been scrapped, and
  53.         instead, this and other flags are configurable for each
  54.         individual document.  Combined with the expanded subject line
  55.         feature mentioned above, you can create file requests (why?) or
  56.         file attaches as responses to document requests.  You can even
  57.         crashmail the response, if you've got more money than sense.

  59. REMOTE MAINTENANCE OF DOCUMENTS (PASSWORDED FOR SECURITY)

  61.         You can now give users and points their own document if they
  62.         can't run InfoMail themselves.  Set up a document, include a
  63.         remote maintenance password, tell the user what it is, and they
  64.         can keep the document text updated themselves without further
  65.         action from you.

  67. POSTS DOCUMENTS UP TO 16K IN SIZE
  68.  
  69.         Some people (myself included) found that 8k was a bit
  70.         restrictive so I've increased the maximum message size to 16k.
  71.         This is about the limit now, as there are some systems out there
  72.         which cannot easily route messages above this size.  If your FAQ
  73.         or other document is bigger, you might want to split it and
  74.         offer it as separate documents.

  76. AUTOMATIC UPGRADE FACILITY

  78.         If you're upgrading from InfoMail 1.00 you can upgrade with a
  79.         single command at the DOS command prompt.  Needless to say, you
  80.         won't be taking advantage of any of the new features until you
  81.         actually change your configuration or documents.

  83. INCREASED SPEED OF DOCUMENT POSTING

  85.         InfoMail 1.00 was incredibly slow at posting documents on my
  86.         little 386SX.  No-one else seemed to notice so perhaps my system
  87.         is more than a little out of date.  Still, I've improved this
  88.         for my own requirements if nothing else.

  90. A COUPLE OF AESTHETIC MINOR INTERFACE BUGS FIXED
  91.  
  92.         As DOS doesn't store the netmails in any relevant order the
  93.         netmail counter looked a bit silly, and if netmail 123 was read,
  94.         followed by netmail 42, the display would say 423.  There were a
  95.         few other things I didn't like about the interface, too petty to
  96.         mention.  They've all been fixed.

  98. A 386 VERSION OF THE PROGRAM

  100.         Yes, it seems to be the done thing to supply 386-optimised
  101.         versions of programs.  So INFO386.EXE has been provided.  I
  102.         don't have a DOS extender or anything so this is just a version
  103.         of INFOMAIL.EXE compiled with 386 instructions.  I don't know if
  104.         the speed upgrade is worth the effort, but you might as well use
  105.         it now it's there (provided you're not running on an 8086 or
  106.         286, of course).
